December 2012
Smiles are still radiating from the children’s faces as they discuss Favorite Book Character Day. Loving parents created costumes and listened attentively, talented students discussed their favorite book character, and gifted writers wrote books which children could connect with! Thank you for your support and for the love of reading you are instilling in your child.
This season of giving is enhanced by God’s children learning and working together in our classroom. Each day brings a new challenge of fun books to read, creative writing opportunities, mathematical problem solving, and challenges to stretch one’s understanding.
Children are writing letters to Santa in which they discuss their behavior this past year. They are also creating a new book, Santa’s Busy Week. Yes, your little elves are busy.
Please mark Monday, December 17, at 6:30 on your calendar for our BBS Christmas program. Our elementary school students will be singing for your enjoyment.

February 2013
Tomorrow our friends will share ice cream sundaes and valentines. Each child will need to bring a valentine for each classmate. Our share times will begin at 2:00. Mrs. Maddux announced that the children may dress in school uniform or something red. Each slot on the sign-up sheet has been filled. You are such gracious helpers.
"I can't help myself. I read all the time." A first grader said this to me this week. What music to my ears! Our class team has read 360 books outside the classroom. Can't you see them improving? One way to incorporate math with the 100 Book Club is to give your child a penny for each book they have read. After counting the pennies and understanding their value, have them trade the pennies for the appropriate number of nickels and compare value. Exchange the nickels for dimes and compare. Have they earned enough for any quarters? What other combinations could be made? Each time they read a book let them add a penny to their collection and make any trades they can. At first this may seem difficult but with practice, mastery will be attained.

March 2012
Warmer days are being enjoyed by our first graders. Wednesday, March 20, we plan to share an Easter egg hunt on the BBS campus. Each child will need to bring 12 FILLED plastic eggs and a bucket or basket with their name on the bottom. Please avoid any treats with peanuts due to the fact that we will be hiding eggs in a public area and a child with an allergy from another class might find the egg. Our second grade friends will hide our eggs and we will return the favor by hiding theirs. Our snack friend of the day will bring their chosen snack and there will not be a "party" as such. Friends, sunshine and Easter eggs should make for a delightful morning.
I am looking forward to our conferences. Please help me stay on schedule as we share ideas about your special child.
