September 7, 2010

The discovery theme for this week is “Me and My Family.”  For our Language experiences we will read the wonderful books How Many Feet in the Bed?, Oh, Were They Every Happy!, The Napping House, Families Are Different, and Me and My Family Tree.  We will engage in many exciting activities for each book including painting our Home Living Center House (like the children in the story Oh, Were They Ever Happy!) and making a Napping House Book.  The letters “F” and “E” will be added to our Class Dictionary and Handwriting Dictionaries.

The Math focus is counting (by ones, fives, and tens), sorting, estimating, graphing, and problem solving.  The book How Many Feet in the Bed? will be extended into a problem solving activity.

The Social Studies emphasis is learning our place in the world.  The books Me on the Map and My Maps will be read to help us better understand where we live.  We will make paper models of our houses to display.  The children will also participate in activities reinforcing knowledge of their address.

In Science, we continue discovering our world using the five senses.  The sense of hearing and the sense of touch will be emphasized.  We will read the nonfiction books Touching, Hearing, and Our Senses.

For writing we continue daily journaling, Writers’ Workshop, and Handwriting Without Tears.

The Bible emphasis is the first family God made (Genesis 2).
