Statement of Beliefs

The Boyd Buchanan School Beliefs Statement is in concert with the message of God as reflected in the Bible and historic Christianity. It was created to inspire the Board of Trustees, Administration, Faculty, and Staff to be like-minded and unified to accomplish God’s purpose
and will for Boyd Buchanan School. These statements define the perspective that shapes a Boyd Buchanan education.

We believe in one God, who exists eternally in three persons – the everlasting Father, His only begotten Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:16; John 1:1; John 8:58; John 10:33-38; 2 Corinthians 13:13; Revelation 22:3)

We believe that scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is the inspired and authoritative word of God, revealed by the Holy Spirit. It provides for all humankind absolute moral truths, and is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” so we may be complete and equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:15-17)

We believe that God created the heavens and the earth and that the biblical accounts of creation indicate that it was done with purpose and design for the glory of God. (Genesis 1 & 2; Psalm 104; Isaiah 45:5-12)

We believe that God created man and woman in His own image, as free moral agents, distinct from all other living creatures. We believe they sinned by rebelling against God’s stated will and thereby incurred both physical and spiritual death. We believe that the consequences of sin are universal. (Genesis 1 and 2)

We believe in the existence of Satan, sin, and evil powers. We believe that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross determined the ultimate defeat of Satan and gives us freedom from sin. (2 Corinthians 11:14, Revelation 12:9, John 10:14-18, Acts 2:24, I Corinthians 15:3-5)

We believe that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, true God, and true man, existing in one person and lived a sinless life upon this earth. We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into heaven, and in His presence there for us as Lord of all, High Priest and advocate. (Matthew 1:18-24, Mark 16:19, Acts 2:24, John 10:14-18)

We believe in the hope that Jesus Christ will return personally, visibly, and unexpectedly, in power and great glory, to gather his people, raise the dead, judge the nations, and bring His kingdom to fulfillment. (Isaiah 11:1-9; Matthew 24:30-31; John 14:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:3-58; Revelation 21 & 22)

We believe that the Holy Spirit dwells within believers, convicts them of sin, guides them in understanding scripture, empowers them for Godly living, and equips them for service and witness.(Romans 8:9-11, 2 Corinthians 6:16, 2 Timothy 1:14)

We believe that salvation is a free gift from God, undeserved and unearned through our good works; that we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ; that faith shows itself in obedience to Christ through repentance, confession of faith in Him, baptism, and a life led by the Holy Spirit, manifesting the Spirit’s fruit. (Acts 2:38; Romans 1:5; Romans 3:21-24; Galatians 5:6; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 2:11)

We believe that the church is the body of Christ and composed of believers gathered in response to Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. The mission of the church is to be God’s redeemed community, embodying His love by worshipping God with confession, prayer, and praise in spirit and in truth; by proclaiming God’s love to the ends of the earth by word and deed; by submitting to the authority of the Bible and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, rather than the dictates of man or ecclesiastical order; and by caring for all of God’s creation and actively seeking the good of everyone, especially the poor and needy. (Matthew 28:19,20; John 20:21-23; 2 Corinthians 5:16-20; Galatians 3:28; Philippians 2:6-11, Romans 12, I John 3:17-18)

We believe in the universal worth of all humankind as God’s beloved creation, and equality in honor, equity, justice, and mercy for every person. (Genesis 1:26-27, Isaiah 65:17-25, Romans 8:18-25, Ephesians 1:5, 1 Peter 2:9)

We believe that faith is far more than intellectual affirmation and impacts our actions. We believe that daily expressions of faith are vital to spiritual development, growth, and Godly community. As a result, we practice our faith openly and without fear on our campus through daily Bible study, corporate and individual prayer, regular campus chapels, and service projects. (Galatians 5:22,23; Ephesians 2:10; James 2:26)

BBS Shield

Founded in 1952, BBS is located in scenic Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Boyd Buchanan School was founded in 1952 by members of the churches of Christ in Chattanooga. The aim of the school was to provide a well-rounded academic program in a Christian environment upholding the Bible as the inspired Word of God.

The church of Christ is rooted in the Stone-Campbell Movement that sought to restore Christian unity to a divided church through biblical faith and simple practice. Boyd Buchanan seeks to honor that heritage. We are both an academic institution and a spiritual community.

Boyd Buchanan’s history extends back to its beginning in a local mansion at 950 Vine Street in downtown Chattanooga. Several visionaries came together and, with the support of other members of the Christian community, established Boyd Buchanan School, known then as Chattanooga Bible School. The school opened in the fall of 1952 with approximately 150 students in kindergarten through 6th grade,

In the summer of 1959, the name changed to Boyd Buchanan School to honor two men who had greatly influenced the principles upon which the school was founded.

Having outgrown the mansion downtown, the property was purchased in the suburbs of Chattanooga and 1961-62 was the first school year in the new building. Boyd Buchanan graduated the first senior class in 1979.

Over the years, Boyd Buchanan School has grown each year according to their mission: spiritually, academically, physically and socially.

Today, BBS is situated on a picturesque 58-acre campus and has a student body of more than 1,000 across grades Pre-K through 12th.
