Establishing Identity Through Service
Speaking specifically of the middle school years, Child Psychologist Erik Erikson once said, "At no other time in the life cycle are the chances of finding one's self and losing one's self so closely aligned." This presents those involved in middle school education with a weighty responsibility but also a wonderful opportunity to make a remarkable impact on students' lives by helping them "find themselves."
At Boyd Buchanan Middle School, the notion of developing a healthy identity as an individual as well as a member of a community is deeply ingrained in our House System. As students progress throughout their middle school years as a member of either Chara, Tharros, Sofia, or Phileo, they explore how the core values of Joy, Courage, Wisdom and Fellowship can play a key role in their lives. They engage in service projects, compete for house points, push each other academically, and forge a deep sense of tradition and honor as they bring their own unique talents and traits to the greater whole of each BBMS House.
One important facet of the BBMS House System is the fact that each house adopts its own charitable organization that brings a deeper sense of meaning and identity to House membership. Currently, the BBMS House charities are as follows:
Chara - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Bradley County
Sofia - St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital
Tharros - Lana's Love
Phileo - Snack Packs
This year, each House is sponsoring a special week-long service project dedicated to its own House charity. All students of any house are encouraged to be involved as the entire school practices what it means to become the hands and feet of Jesus through service. Sofia and Phileo have already stepped up by hosting a coloring book drive for St. Jude's and a canned food drive for Snack Packs. Special events for the charities of Chara and Tharros await during the second semester, so be on the lookout for these great opportunities to volunteer and to help our student body develop as servant leaders!
